Update from the lame one.

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 12:41 AM
All of your comments have meant so much to me. I'm pretty much an emotional wreck so every little bit of encouragement to keep trying really helps a lot... be it a response to a facebook post or responses here. I told my folks about how I got hit by the car and I was expecting them to be mad at me since they have always said I was not careful enough when running-- But they were really nice and supported my desire to see a sports doctor! I think they *do* get how much running means to me after all.  But, honestly the only people who really get it are you guys.

I'm going to see this clinic: http://www.nypodiatry.net/office.php I'm told a few of the doctors there are runners, and I hope they can explain how aqua-jogging works since that looks like my best bet. The fractures are in the 3rd and 4th metatarsals the doctors said it was a "hairline" fracture and I read that is the kind that heals a little faster... But I want to get another set of X-rays.

I spent the day with my niece but as we drove around town I kept seeing streets that I loved to run on and thinking "I love running on this street" -- and then I'd feel so sad and trapped. Yesterday I biked about 25 miles and was only way to running 7... when everything was just stopped. I guess life just gives you a sucker punch some days.  I mean it's only 4-6 weeks... I've just gotta remember that-- it's not forever... but it FEELS that way.

I don't know why I feel like I need to tell you guys all of this.

Monumental

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 11:33 PM
Ran the Monumental Marathon in Indianapolis today. Lovely course. But a bit hillier than the pancake flat Chicago course. Beautiful day. But a bit warmer than is really ideal for running that distance.

Still, I'm not complaining.
I'm so glad it wasn't raining.

Fail Day - anybody else ever have one?

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 6:42 PM
So I woke up this morning to a beautiful, clear, warm, sunny day - which in November in Barrie, Ontario is a rare and wonderful thing.  Had breakfast with my neighbour and did the laundry, all the while looking forward to going for a run.  Got decked out in my "cool weather running" outfit and headed out along the Lakeshore downtown here looking forward to my favourite 10K route.  2K's into it I still hadn't caught my pace or breathing and was hot and tired.  Decided to walk back home, take off the fuel belt & jacket and try again in the opposite direction along the trail beside the lake.  1K into that my chest was sore, my legs were tired, the cold wind was annoying me and I just could.not.get.into.it.  Turned off the tunes, walked back home and curled up on the couch with my cuddling cat and slept for an hour.   :(

Apparently it's supposed to be nice again tomorrow, if so I'll try again for just a 5K.

Has anybody else ever had a Fail Day like that?

In case anyone cares to peek...

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 12:15 PM
... I made a running blog today! I want to blog about all the runs I have from today til my marathon in May. Because I really like reading about my runs and now I can talk about them all I want without boring all my friends!

But I figure other running friends might be a tad interested, so here you go: http://kristinerunning.blogspot.com :)

Crisp, clear November SATURDAILIES!

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 10:56 AM
Good morning runners! Happy weekend! Here's the daily training thread!

I started my day with a nice, relaxed 10 mile run around North Point. The sky was crystal clear, the sun was bright, and the temperature was crisp -- exactly the sort of conditions I picture when I think about running in November, perfect. The first few miles I noticed some ROTC members also making use of the park road. It looked like some sort of training or test or something, there were cones every quarter mile and a guy with a stop watch. The rest of today will be spent doing some cleaning around the house, elevating my legs, and I might do another 3-4 miles in the early evening. Tonight I'm slow-cooking some BBQ ribs and drinking a lot of really good beer.

So what is everyone else up to today, training and otherwise?

I also want to wish a BIG GOOD LUCK(!) to all those [info]runners who are racing this weekend, or otherwise going for some sort of PR! Swift thoughts your way!

Multimedia for the day: This is a stretch but it's got the word "November" in it. And <3 Regina Spektor <3

Discuss... and HAPPY RUNNING!
What a gorgeous day in Georgia to go running!  Temps at race start were around 45 degrees and the sun was shining.

I'm still recovering from some IT band issues so have been focusing only on the 3 mile distance rather than continuing to train for my Half Marathon.  I had to back out of my first Half  last March when I originally started having IT issues and was supposed to run a half on Halloween that didn't happen since everyone else backed out.  So I've decided to focus on 5 and 10k runs for right now.

The family entertainment center that I work for, Stars and Strikes is a sponsor for the Special Olympics and each year a team gets together to run the race.  Nothing better than a race where work will pay for your entry fee AND the money goes to a good cause!

I usually like to arrive at local races about 30 minutes early to walk around, chat with people etc but this morning it was cold!  I arrived just in time to pick up my number and head to the start line.  The first mile was through the shopping center and even though I've driven through there hundreds of times, I had no clue how hilly it was!  Nice small rolling hills, but lots of them.  We came out from around the back of the shopping area and then on to the main road.  One huge hill up and back down, turn around and do it again.  Then back the other direction, through the shopping center one more time and to the finish.

Splits were 11:23, 22:25 and a finish at 35:53.  This is my second PR in as many weeks with my last finish time being 39:06 (there were no split times available).  The first place finisher in my age group came in about 4 minutes ahead of me, so now I know what to shoot for as far as my goal pace for the next race.  :)  I'm stoked with my finish time considering my finish time for my first 5k last year was 48:something.  I've improved considerably in the last year and it's great to be able to look back at all of my bibs and see PR's for each race I've done.  As long as I just keep getting a little bit faster each time, then it's worth it to keep running.  :)

Science and running: a blog update

In this late Friday night post, I blog about one of the secrets of my success, and it lies at the intersection of running and science.

guys a car ran over my foot and broke two little bones. I'm just back from the hospital now. I'm so... lost feeling I don't know what I will do for the next month (?) while it heals.

I need to run. It keeps me sane...

:(

I'm so sad right now.

I won't get to run that 5-mile race on the 27th.

I'll run again but I'm going lose all of the fitness I built up over the summer.

I need to figure out how I will get through this.

New York City Marathon! YEAH!

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
I ran the NYC Marathon on Sunday and had the BEST RACE EVER. Not because I ran especially fast; my time of 4:16:55 was more than 30 minutes slower than my PR. No, this was the BEST RACE EVER because my only goal was to take it easy and enjoy myself. I did just that and loved it. I'm saving my next round of kick-my-own-ass for next April's Boston Marathon; NYC was all about falling in love with running all over again. And I did; I loved every single minute even in the last few miles when my feet and legs were screaming in pain. I wanted it to end so badly, and yet, at the same time, I didn't, because I was having the best time EVER.

Run with me! )

What I'm Reading.

Follow Friday

Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die". Just introduce us to some new things to read.

[info - personal] flourish is reading pop-culture-studies books for National Blog Post Month. Her blog's pretty awesome otherwise too.

Let's Play

My current read is the entire Quest for Glory series by Bobbin Threadbare. There are lots of Sierra games that I've always wanted to learn more about, and this series is a lot of fun to read about.

Pictures

My dad has a Flickr account ([info - syndicated] dedalus1947_flickr_feed), recently featuring children in costumes and Dia de los Muertos festivities.

Fandom

When the intensity of [info]whedonland subsides, I like to dip into [info]tvpassiton

Puzzles

A little while ago, I refound my Nikoli books of Slitherlink and Nurikabe, and I've been solving them on my commute. I think I'm only a few puzzles away from completing the Slitherlink book.

I also have the Naughty Crosswords for bathroom solving.

Print

For a while, working on the Nikoli books, I wasn't reading as much. I'm back in trying to finish This Small City Will Be a Mexican Paradise by Michael J. González. It examines Mexican Angeleños' relationship with the state of Mexico and the "Indians" who were already living in the area.

knee pain?

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 1:34 PM

Hi all,

I've always had sort of arthritic/creaky/sometimes fluid-filled knees. I'm used to this type of pain.
But today I have weird, shooting pain sort of.. below my knee/at the top side of my shin? It's painful and feels lik eit's shooting from where it originates to a bit down my shin and then it goes away for a bit.. rinse, repeat.

Nothing I can find seems to describe this exactly.. any ideas?

Just curious, does anyone have any experience with the P90X system?  Any thoughts on it?

TGIFridailies

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 9:43 AM
Good morning, [info]runners!

I know I said I was done guest hosting the dailies, but that turned out to be a lie. Deal with it :)

What's new with everyone on this lovely Friday? I've got a 50 minute easy run on tap, and my team is selling t-shirts as a fundraiser today.

And now time for the traditional Friday question. Weekend plans? Who's racing? Who's working out? Tonight is kind of a bust because I have to be in the lab at 8 tonight, I've got a workout on Saturday morning. But once I finish up there, I'm driving down to Baltimore. I've been promised steak ;)

Good luck to everyone racing/setting new training PRs this weekend, and happy running!

Fashion Alert: ViolentBelle Sale

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 11:12 PM
[info]ojouchan is holding a sale tomorrow on her Etsy website.
Tomorrow ViolentBelle is having a MASSIVE sale. Most things will be between 20- 50% off. But only for one day. Yeah. I know. One day sale. I'll be posting new things too. Necklaces made of bone and found objects. More hats. Clothes. That's right. Vintage wear. But all the remaining stuff? Super Duper cheap.
There's loads of good stuff there right now, and I know there's other stuff she hasn't listed yet. For example, she's going through a bunch of her vintage clothes to find some stuff to add.

Here are some old pieces that I like:

Plum Delicious- Swarovski Crystal Horn Barrettes Boho Honey- Vintage Woven Ribbon Choker Mushroom Hunting- Victorian Mini Straw Hat with Vintage Trim

But don't forget, the sale is one day only.

++Marathon training plan practise...++

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 7:18 AM

I went out running this morning whilst there was still a definite fug in the air. A smell from Bonfire Night last night I reckon.

I took this run as Marathon Training Plan practise. That is I tried to run it at the 7:48 pace that they recommend in the first 4 weeks. Hard to be consistent though even with Mr Garmins help!
In the end I got a bit fed up of it to be honest and just ran the rest of the 8.5 mile route out.
As for the training plan (Smart Coach from Runners World) that's due to start next week, I may take the pace timings with a pinch of salt.

Or am I missing the point?

Sleepy Day

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 7:39 PM
I spent a lot of the day in bed. Just relaxing, reading the internet, snuggling with [info]ojouchan.

Is anyone interested in seeing this with me next week?

El Verde Origins--El Verde vs. La Quinceañera: Who Will Win?
Get ready boys and girls for a thrilling episode of El Verde! Meet mild mannered Arturo Sanchez, born as an alien from the not so far away world of Mexico and raised in the good old U.S. of A. All Arturo ever wanted was to live an ordinary life, but after a freak elote accident, Arturo became . . . El Verde!!!

Join us as we go back, way back, to see how it all began. This November, TeAda Productions will present THE ORIGINS OF EL VERDE. Watch as Arturo becomes the superhero who fights for truth, justice, and the Mexican-American way! Then watch him as he battles the evil La Quinceañera with her ultimate plot to destroy the world.

Yes, EL VERDE is the live superhero show that’s fun for the whole family. If you’ve never been to an EL VERDE show before, be sure not to miss this one.
I meant to catch the show in August, but we got all busy. I don't want to let this one go by.

Nuts

Latest word: the homicidal psycho-psychiatrist rumored-possible-jihadi-sympathizing Army Major is alive.

I'd rather he were dead
instead.

Need creative help!

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 9:21 PM
So I'm starting to run low on mealpoints. At this rate, I should have to go two weeks without food at the end of the semester... Haha.

Basically I have a mealplan that lets me eat anywhere on campus, but some places I get more of a discount at than others. One of the most expensive places to eat is inside the math building. And this is what my life looks like on MWF:

10:00-1:00: Class in math building.
1:00-2:00: History
2:00-5:00: Practice

So obviously, I usually eat in the math building. But! I can't afford that anymore.

Now what I can do relatively cheaply is buy stuff from the dining hall (cheapest place to buy with my points) at breakfast, and then eat it during class. The only thing is that this will need to be breakfast food as lunch doesn't start until 11.

Normally they have bagels, donuts, muffins, various toppings and condiments, Belgian waffles (both wheat and regular), really crappy yogurt, oatmeal, grits, granola, various cereals, eggs, breakfast sandwiches, french toast, bacon, and sausage. I might be forgetting things.

With these options, how could I put together a few distinct substantial lunches that would leave me feeling full and energetic for practice? They don't need to be lunch-y, I can suck up eating two breakfasts a day.

And anyone have any other cheap and accessible ideas? I can't get to a grocery store without taking a bus, but there is a CVS in walking distance...

Please help, I'm running enough that with my current eating habits I'm accidentally dropping weight o.o
